Goddess Fish Promotions is organizing a Virtual Book Tour for queen
of clubs: Cora by Katie de Long, an erotic romance available November 14, 2014.
Before we get to the good stuff Katie is going to tell us what the hardest part about writing is...
Okay, so I might get a bit personal here.
Trigger warning for
allusion to traumatic material.
The hardest part about writing, particularly about writing romance
or contemporary fiction is the psychology. I write this as I recover from
writing the first draft of an exhausting and entirely too personal novel that
I'm not sure I'll ever be able to distance myself from to rewrite and
publish.
When I was writing it, I was downright sick. I wanted to work on
it exhaustively, just so I could say it was out of my head after the first
draft. I slept badly, had panic attacks every night, and it even leaked into my
actual relationship.
See, when you write scifi romance, fantasy, all of that, you can
distance yourself from your characters quite easily; even when they suffer
abuse or violence, or even almost universal issues like cheating spouses,
infertility, illness, it's in the context of their world- not in
the context of ours. Their husband left them, but he's still a cybernetic fairy
android making first contact with aliens.
You can build empathy with characters in fantasy/scifi/specfic by
considering the core of that experience, when drained of the nanobots and
vampirism, but there's still a buffer that you can't get in
non-fantastic contemporary settings. I am in awe of authors who can create
human and empathetic characters despite those added elements and distractions.
It's an art unto itself. But I don't believe it has the same vulnerability.
It's much harder to do hold the story at a
distance when you know ten people who've been in the exact same situation your
character is now. No “if you take this out” or “but that couldn't happen now.”
The hardest thing about writing contemporary is realizing that my
characters are facing real things.
The best thing about writing contemporary romance is that at least
it's in my power to give them a happy ending.
I wish I could do the same for the rest of us.

clubs
by Katie de Long
The exotic dancers
and employees of the Queen of Clubs walk a fine line, with only wits, beauty,
and market savvy to keep them from toppling into the shark pit. Ride shotgun
through lapdances, romance, and sexual awakenings. Don't worry, these girls
won't ask what your hands are doing under the tip rail.
Cora, an adventurous
student, finds herself auditioning for a stripping gig...and it comes with more
than the asking price, including a very attractive DJ.
Queen of Clubs
contains adult content, and is intended for mature readers. Each Queen of Clubs
title is a standalone novella length work.
Excerpt
I prayed the song wouldn't end. Would the next one jar me
out of this rhythm? Would I wake up and discover it was a dream, that I was
still the awkward college student I had to be the rest of the time? I slid the
straps of my bra off my shoulders and undid the catch, but hesitated to let it
fall away from me.
I looked toward Kirk and met his eyes. Fuck. He'd been
staring, a combination of lust, pride, and approval in the small smile on his
face. It reassured me, and against my better judgment, I grinned back.

Author Bio
Katie de Long lives in the Pacific northwest,
realizing her dream of being a crazy cat-lady. As a kid, Katie flagged the
fade-to-blacks in every adult book she encountered, and when she began writing,
she vowed to use cutaways sparingly. After all, that's when the good stuff
happens. And on a kindle, no one asks why there's so many bookmarks in her
library.
